When generation 6 came out there were 2 Ghost/Grass pokemon on the block, Gourgeist and Trevenant. Both had similar stats in general and it really came down to - which of the two is more special? Unfortunately, Gourgeist lost that battle for the most part to Trevenant, who had obtained the ability Harvest (50% chance of regenerating a consumed Berry at the end of the turn) and was therefore overall bulkier. Now, this doesn't mean that Gourgeist isn't useful - it's simply outclassed, just like a lot of other good pokemon, such as Infernape and Flygon. Gourgeist has a gimmick of having four different size, corresponding with size - small, average, large and super - and each of those sizes has different statistics, with the larger it gets, the more defensively capable it is. Thanks to the recent 2014 Gourgeist event, Gourgeist (Super Size) was finally obtainable with its Hidden Ability, Insomnia, which gives this pokemon a great defensive niche, even as a doubles Pokemon.

So, moving onto the set, this is a pretty standard burnstall build, reminiscent of multiple defensive grass-and-ghost-types in the past, but this combines the two to do a similar job to Trevenant in trying to make your opponent switch out before your status moves become too unbearable. Leech Seed is there for survivability, helping you to restore your HP where you can, Will-O-Wisp is a choice for increasing your overall team bulk by halving the opponent's physical attack stat, while Toxic plays to the toxic-leech seed idea of burning your opponent's HP away at great speed. Shadow Sneak and Seed Bomb are offensive choices that support Gourgeist's respectable Attack stat. Seed Bomb is for dealing large STAB damage at once, while Shadow Sneak is a decent STAB priority move that lets you revenge kill weak Pokemon after one of yours has been KO'd. Protect is really just there for standard Protectstalling.

In the Halloween Party competition, everything is a ghost-type, meaning that Shadow Sneak will almost always be super effective, adding to its usability. One thing to note is that the ghost type is overly saturated with special attackers (Gengar, Mismagius, Chandelure, etc.) and so Gourgeist's physically defensive abilities could be worth less than Trevenant's, but the thing is that it's a specified rule that EVERY team competing in the competition has to have a Super Size Gourgeist, and the problem is that Trevenant and Gourgeist are not going to blend into the same team well - as they both do the same job in different ways. Gourgeist does have a niche however, as being one of the few pokemon in the competition that will quite easily be able to live through an attack from an Aegislash and perhaps retaliate. Aegislash is essentially the only competent physical attacker in the competition's rules and is certainly a pokemon that you should be wary of. Gourgeist is your one stop answer to Aegislash, if you play it right. Seeing as King's Shield only blocks damaging attacks, but not status attacks, Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed can easily pass through the protection and either force your opponent to continue with their special offenses (Shadow Ball + Weakness Policy is quite standard nowadays), or switch out to save their pokemon from further damage. One should remember that whereas Toxic is a decent choice to help wear down Jellicents, Dusclops and other Gourgeists within the competition, seeing as it is a poison-type move, it cannot affect Aegislash (who is a steel-type). The preferance is yours.

One last point to make is that Gourgeist's Hidden Ability (Insomnia) is only obtainable on Super Size Gourgeist from the 2014 Halloween event Gourgeist - you cannot catch one in-game.
Gourgeist's forme will not change once caught - if you have a Small Pumpkaboo and you evolve it, it will be a small Gourgeist.
Pumpkaboo must be traded to evolve into Gourgeist.
